Highly Useful And Fun
The ScanGuage II was the only reasonable product I could find for determining my mileage. I read up on it and it seemed very attractive. I wanted to use it to see how high I could get my mileage. So I ordered it with an extra cable for my other vehicle and it came in just a few days.

I plugged in the cord to my vehicle and wound the slack around the steering wheel (as close to the dash as possible, it does not interfere with steering at all) and tied it tight with twist ties. I mounted the unit with velcro above the dash so everyone in my vehicle (Toyota Matrix) can see it easily. In my other vehicle (Toyota Corrolla) I put it behind the steering wheel so I could see it through the wheel (I used velcro on the bottom and back of my ScanGuage and plug in the cord on the back for the Matrix and the right side for the Corolla). I leave my ScanGuage on the guage screen at all times and it turns on and off with my vehicle (so I don't have to think about it). It's not as visible as a GPS on the windshield but you still should hide it when leaving the car).

The 4 gauges I leave on my screen are RPM, speed (MPH), instant MPG, and average trip mileage (which I programmed myself using the manual as AVG). So I use my MPG reading to help me improve my AVG reading. Just playing around I notice turning the air condition on causes my RPM to go up by 100 when my car is idling. I had to adjust the gauge speed to make it match more closely to my speedometer. I set the backlight to red to match my car radio display and I use the fillup feature to set the price I paid for gas if I ever want to see how much driving is costing me each trip.

A few things about it: the ScanGauges calls a new day when you don't drive for 8 hours. My car usually does not sit for 8 hours so the day computer turns into many days. Also, I don't think it distinguishes between vehicles so if you move it back and forth it will not notice (so your gallons to empty won't be accurate).

Some driving habits I use are coasting to stops, not slowing down completely for turns wherever safe, and using cruise control whenever I go for stretches without stopping. On hilly roads I gain my speed going down and lose speed going up. I turn the car off when stopped for a few minutes (but annoyingly this resets the trip which I don't always want to do). I anticipate lights as best I can (which sometimes means speeding up to a distant red if I know it will change soon and I need to get there before it changes back again). Sometimes I want to get into an empty turning lane before the light turns green so I trigger the arrow, meaning I won't want to coast too slowly or I will miss it. I also take the first parking spot I find and walk inside as opposed to the drive through.

My 2006 Matrix is rated at 28 city and 34 highway. I can get ~34 city driving around in traffic during the day and up to 40 driving at night. On the highway I have gotten up to 46mpg (which is really the best I can get maintaining a speed for a long time). Usually I get around 40 on the highway when there is some traffic. On long stretches of routes with traffic lights that I anticipate well (much easier to do at night) I can get above 40 as well. But even though the ScanGauge is telling you your mileage, I would always check when you fillup by dividing the miles you went (reset the odometer every fillup) by the number of gallons you needed to get to full (do not top off your tank). These numbers have obviously increased since I became aware of how I was driving and got the ScanGauge since it really does turn it into a game depending on how much attention you give it. When you're alone it's obviously much easier (and less annoying) to pay attention than when you are with or around other people.

The ScanGuage is a nice digital screen for those of us that don't have its gauges built into our cars. Once you get used to it you don't think about it much. I highly recommend it to anyone interested in knowing their fuel economy and improving it to save money and reduce consumption. If these gauges were standard in all vehicles America would learn to use a lot less oil.

Great way to save ga$ $
I use this item on two different cars and have found changing my driving habits can save gas dollars and increase miles per gallon. I use it mainly to get optimum mpg. The unit calculates many other functions by interfacing with your car's computer. If you get a "check engine" light you can read the codes and determine what is wrong before you "take it in" for repair. It plugs in easily to your car's computer. The only small request would be to have a connector input on the left side of the unit. It already has one in the rear and right side. I think and great investment and it's made in the U.S.A.

does not fit all vehicles
This item's description does not specify what vehicles it will and will not work with,it will not work with many vehicles . I happen to have 4 vehicles and it will only work with two of them. It does work fine with the ones that it will work with.

Worth it's weight in gold!!!! Easy to use!!!!
My husband and I purchased this scanguage because we were not getting the gas mileage we had been expecting with our new car. Being able to see real-time reporting of the MPG, Throttle, Engine Load, etc has enabled us to improve our gas mileage by TEN miles a gallon. Then you add in all of the things we used to calculate manually like $ cost per trip, per day, gallons left in the tank, average mgp for trip, day, previous day and even the whole tank. This thing is SUPER easy to configure and will pay for itself in just a few months.
